Patient guide for an endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure

2024-05-14T01:22:46-07:00

ClosureFast™, an endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure, offers a revolutionary solution for combating the backward flow of blood, known as “Venous reflux,” in the saphenous veins. These veins, namely the great saphenous veins and small saphenous veins, are pivotal superficial veins located along the inner and back of the leg, respectively.

This minimally invasive procedure, often completed in less than an hour, is designed to restore proper blood flow and alleviate symptoms associated with venous reflux. Patients typically experience a swift recovery and can resume their usual level of activity on the same day.

How Does the Treatment Work?

radiofrequency ablation

The ClosureFast™ procedure begins by numbing the skin with lidocaine. A tiny wire and the ClosureFast® catheter are then inserted into the affected vein. The catheter delivers radio-frequency energy to the vein wall, effectively sealing it shut. Despite this closure, blood circulation remains unaffected as the remaining healthy veins continue to efficiently transport blood back to the heart.

What Should I Expect on the Day of Treatment?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with the option for patients to use a mild oral sedative, such as Valium, for added comfort. Patients are encouraged to wear a gown and leave their underwear on during the procedure. Depending on the vein to be treated, patients may lie on their back or belly, with special accommodations made for comfort, such as body positioning and the use of pillows.

To ensure comfort and relaxation, patients have the option to watch a movie on Netflix or listen to music during the procedure. Once settled, the skin around the affected vein(s) is prepped with a cleansing solution for a sterile procedure. The doctor then uses ultrasound to map the vein(s) to be treated before administering a numbing agent (lidocaine) into the skin.

A tiny puncture is made in the numb area of the skin to pass the radiofrequency catheter. Additionally, a combination of cool saline and local anesthetic is injected around the vein to be treated, numbing it and insulating it from the surrounding tissue. With the area adequately prepared, the vein is painlessly treated with radiofrequency energy.

Following the treatment, the leg is cleaned, and a compression stocking is applied, which the patient will wear continuously for 72 hours. Patients are encouraged to walk for 30 minutes before leaving the clinic to promote circulation.

ClosureFast™ Radiofrequency Ablation offers a highly effective and minimally invasive solution for addressing venous reflux and its associated symptoms. With its quick procedure time and rapid recovery, patients can reclaim comfort and confidence in their leg health with minimal disruption to their daily lives. If you’re ready to bid farewell to venous reflux, schedule a consultation with us today and take the first step towards healthier, happier legs.

Could I have a DVT? Learn signs and symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis

2024-03-22T19:57:04-07:00

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition characterized by the formation of blood clots in deep veins, most commonly in the legs. Often, individuals may not experience any symptoms, but when they do manifest, recognizing them promptly is crucial for seeking medical attention and preventing complications. Let’s explore the signs and symptoms of DVT to better understand this condition.

deep vein

Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

  • Leg Pain and Cramping: Pain in the leg, often described as a muscle cramp or sharp pain, especially during walking, can be an early sign of DVT.
  • Sharp Pain in Calf: A sudden, sharp pain in the calf, particularly when standing or walking, may indicate the presence of a blood clot.
  • Red or Discolored Skin: The affected limb may appear red or discolored due to poor blood circulation caused by the clot.
  • Swelling: Swelling in the affected limb, often accompanied by warmth and tenderness, is a common symptom of DVT.
  • Sudden Onset Leg Swelling: A sudden increase in leg swelling, particularly in one leg, without any apparent cause warrants attention.
  • Enlarged Veins: Sometimes, veins in the affected area may become enlarged or more prominent than usual.
  • Increased Warmth: The skin over the affected vein may feel warmer to the touch compared to the surrounding areas.

Signs of Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

If a blood clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, it can lead to a life-threatening condition known as pulmonary embolism (PE). Signs of PE include:

  • Sudden Breathlessness: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, often sudden in onset, may indicate a pulmonary embolism.
  • Rapid Breathing and Increased Heart Rate: Rapid breathing and a racing heart rate are common symptoms of PE, reflecting the body’s response to reduced oxygen supply.
  • Chest Pain: Chest pain, especially when breathing deeply or coughing, may be sharp and worsen with movement.

Superficial Vein Thrombosis (SVT)

Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT) is a blood clot that develops in a vein close to the skin’s surface. While less serious than DVT, it still requires attention. Symptoms of SVT may include:

  • Painful Cord-Like Sensation: SVT often feels like a hot, painful cord under the skin.
  • Redness: The overlying skin may appear red or inflamed.

Seeking Treatment for DVT

Prompt diagnosis and treatment of DVT are essential to prevent complications. At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, we offer comprehensive treatment options for DVT, including:

  • Blood Thinners: Anticoagulant medications are commonly used to prevent clots from worsening and reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • Clot Busters: Thrombolytic medications may be prescribed for severe cases or when other treatments are ineffective.
  • Filters: In some cases, a filter may be inserted into a large vein to prevent clots from reaching the lungs.
  • Compression Stockings: These special socks help improve circulation and reduce the risk of swelling and clot formation.

If you experience any symptoms suggestive of DVT or PE, seek medical attention promptly. Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes and prevent potentially life-threatening complications. Don’t ignore the signs – prioritize your vascular health and well-being.

4 Patient’s vein treatment testimonials2024-03-06T13:37:56-08:00

Spider vein transformations of our patients

2024-02-17T15:28:37-08:00

Spider veins, those delicate reddish veins adorning the skin’s surface, may hold more significance than mere cosmetic appearance. In this blog post, we’ll uncover the essence of spider veins, exploring their symptoms, delving into their underlying causes, and emphasizing the importance of effective treatment.

Learning More About These Veins

Spider veins, often referred to as thread-like veins, are fine, reddish vessels visible just beneath the skin. While commonly associated with cosmetic issues, they could also hint at underlying problems deserving attention. Despite their visibility, these veins do not necessarily indicate robust circulation.

Revealing Underlying Issues of Spider Veins

Feeder veins, also known as ‘reticular veins’ or ‘blue veins,’ lie beneath the skin’s surface, contributing to the emergence of these veins. These feeder veins, invisible to the naked eye, serve as pathways. Additionally, they may hint at venous insufficiency. For instance, the appearance around inner ankles or thighs might signal issues with the saphenous vein, necessitating ultrasound examination for effective root cause treatment. At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, we use the Venous Duplex Ultrasound for diagnostics and treatment.

Spotting Symptoms

Spider veins can affect individuals differently, with some experiencing painless aesthetic concerns while others endure discomfort. Commonly reported symptoms include burning sensations, throbbing, localized pain, heat, and itchiness. In severe cases, spider veins might even lead to bleeding.

Spider Vein Causes

The veins in the legs share causes with varicose veins, arising from leaky vein valves that allow blood accumulation, leading to vein stretching. Elsewhere on the body, triggers such as sun damage, hormonal fluctuations, or liver disease can induce spider veins. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, birth control use, or hormone replacement therapy can weaken vein walls, contributing to their appearance.

Real Transformations: Patient Success Stories: We used a variety of different minimally invasive vein treatments for these patients. For more information on what types of treatments we offer, check out our website tab of vein treatments.

The vein treatment journeys of our patients showcase visible transformations. Before-and-after images reflect the positive impact of effective treatment on individuals suffering from spider veins. Progress from discomfort and aesthetic concerns toward improved quality of life underscores the significance of seeking proper care.

While spider veins may seem minor, they could serve as windows into underlying vascular issues. Understanding their causes, symptoms, and potential implications empowers individuals to seek suitable vein health solutions. Whether acknowledging the importance of feeder veins, recognizing signs of venous insufficiency, or understanding spider vein triggers, education plays a pivotal role. Addressing spider veins early sets individuals on a path toward healthier, more comfortable lives.

How does ClariVein® help with vein health?

2024-03-06T13:48:21-08:00

Exploring the Innovative ClariVein® Procedure: Benefits, Procedure Walkthrough, and More

For those grappling with backward blood flow or “reflux” in their saphenous vein(s), the ClariVein® procedure stands as a promising minimally invasive remedy. In this article, we’ll delve into the mechanics of this groundbreaking treatment and provide insights into what to anticipate on the day of the procedure. Discover how ClariVein® can help restore leg health and significantly improve your quality of life.

Understanding How the Treatment Functions

The ClariVein® procedure is designed to effectively address saphenous vein reflux. This minimally invasive approach takes less than an hour, allowing patients to resume their daily routines on the same day. But how does this innovative treatment function?

The process commences by numbing the skin with lidocaine. Once the skin is adequately anesthetized, a ClariVein® catheter is cautiously inserted into the affected vein. This catheter executes two crucial treatments:

Mechanical Treatment with a Delicate Rotating Wire: Featuring a small rotating wire, the ClariVein® catheter gently closes the problematic vein. This mechanical treatment is painless yet remarkably effective.

Chemical Treatment using Polidocanol: Alongside the mechanical treatment, the catheter administers polidocanol, a detergent-type sclerosant medication commonly employed in varicose vein treatments. This chemical treatment further contributes to the closure of the vein.

Surprisingly, this technique necessitates only one skin puncture, similar to the placement of an IV. It’s a minimally invasive approach designed to minimize discomfort for patients.

What to Expect on the Treatment Day

Now that you have a clearer understanding of how the ClariVein® procedure operates, let’s delve into what awaits you on the day of your treatment.

Local Anesthesia and Mild Oral Sedative: The procedure is conducted under local anesthesia. Many patients opt to take a mild oral sedative, like Valium, for added relaxation, typically after check-in and paperwork completion.

Comfortable Setup: Upon changing into a gown (leaving your underwear on), you’ll be positioned based on the specific vein to be treated—lying on your back or belly. Special accommodations are arranged for your comfort.

Entertainment Options: To help you relax, you’ll have access to entertainment like watching a movie on Netflix or listening to music during the procedure.

Ultrasound Mapping: Before the treatment begins, the doctor uses ultrasound to map the vein(s) requiring treatment.

Numbing and Puncture: The numbed area of the skin undergoes a tiny puncture to pass the ClariVein® catheter. Lidocaine is injected to ensure a painless process.

Treatment Process: Once the catheter and rotating wire are in place, the doctor initiates the treatment. You might feel a tickling or vibrating sensation, but pain should be minimal to nonexistent.

Compression Stocking: Following the procedure, you’ll be aided in wearing a compression stocking, to be worn continuously for 72 hours.

Post-Procedure Walk: Before departure, you’ll be encouraged to walk for 30 minutes to enhance circulation, further boosting the treatment’s effectiveness.

In Conclusion

The ClariVein® procedure presents a swift, minimally invasive remedy for saphenous vein reflux. By grasping the treatment’s mechanism and anticipating the procedure day, you can approach it confidently. Bid farewell to the discomfort of saphenous vein reflux and usher in a healthier, pain-free future with ClariVein®.

Guided by ultrasound, the foam medication is precisely directed towards these veins. This technique effectively addresses veins near the skin or nerves and navigates complexly twisted veins.

Polidocanol (Asclera®): A Preferred Sclerosant

Polidocanol, known under the brand name Asclera®, stands out as a preferred choice among sclerosant medications. Its patient comfort and minimal risk of side effects make it a prime option for treatment. As a detergent-type medication, polidocanol gently disrupts the inner lining of veins, halting blood flow and eventually leading to vein closure. Approved by the FDA since 2010 for varicose vein treatment, polidocanol has a substantial success record in Europe for decades. Although the transformation of polidocanol into foam for treating larger veins is an off-label use, it has proven remarkably effective and well-tolerated by patients. Our experts at La Jolla Vein Care have extensive experience in foam sclerotherapy, ensuring capable hands for your vein health.

Treatment Frequency: A Tailored Approach

The number and frequency of treatments vary depending on individual anatomy, vein response, and patient goals. Typically, 2 to 5 treatment sessions achieve an 80% improvement. Some larger or stubborn veins may require multiple sessions for a complete response.

What is Varithena injectable foam treatment?

Unveiling Varithena: Advancing Vein Health Through Injectable Foam Treatment

In the landscape of contemporary vein treatments, Varithena (ablation procedure) stands out as a revolutionary solution for managing varicose veins within the great saphenous vein system (GSV). This prescription medication offers a non-thermal, non-tumescent, and nearly painless approach to vein treatment. In this piece, we’ll delve into the intricacies of Varithena®, its efficacy, and what patients can anticipate on the treatment day.

Understanding Varithena®: Your Pathway to Vein Health

Varithena® employs a “microfoam” formulation comprising polidocanol (sclerosing agent) and CO2 to address superficial venous incompetence and visible varicosities linked to the great saphenous vein system. Skillfully injected into the vein under ultrasound guidance, the microfoam displaces blood and efficiently eliminates the endothelial lining via ablation.

The Benefits of Varithena®:

Tailored Approach: Varithena® recommendations are tailored based on vein location, size, anatomy, and tortuosity, effectively treating veins above and below the knee of varying sizes.

Minimally Invasive: This treatment necessitates no incisions, sedation, or general anesthesia, enhancing patient comfort during the procedure.

Non-Invasive Technique: Unlike other methods, Varithena® doesn’t involve inserting a wire along the length of the vein, reducing associated discomfort.

Heat-Free Process: Varithena® avoids heat application, ensuring no risk of thermal injury during the treatment.

Treatment Frequency and Response: A Detailed Overview

The number and frequency of Varithena® treatments are contingent on individual anatomy, vein response rate, and treatment objectives. While larger or resistant veins might necessitate two treatments for a complete response, many veins typically respond well after a single session. The treatment process is cautiously managed to mitigate potential side effects.

On the Day of Varithena® Treatment: What to Expect

Preparing for your Varithena® ablation treatment is simple:

Consent and Attire: You’ll sign a consent form and change into provided shorts.

Skin Preparation: Your skin will be cleansed with alcohol, and ultrasound will locate the veins for targeted treatment.

Injection Process: The foam medication will be skillfully injected into your veins using a fine needle. The foam effectively fills and treats the designated vein section, leading to vein collapse and deactivation.

Recovery Period: You’ll elevate your legs on a comfortable wedge pillow for about 15 minutes post-treatment.

Compression Stockings and Walking: Following treatment, compression stockings will be applied, and you’ll walk for 30 minutes before departure.

Varithena® marks a significant stride in vein health, presenting a swift and effective method for managing varicose veins. At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, our proficient medical professionals are committed to providing personalized care throughout your vein health journey. By embracing advanced solutions like Varithena®, you’re embarking on a confident path toward healthier, pain-free legs and improved well-being.
