What do I need to know about venous disease?

2024-06-09T23:42:06-07:00

Venous disease, known by various names like venous stasis, venous insufficiency, or venous incompetence, is a complex condition that impacts the veins in the legs. This article aims to unravel the intricacies of venous reflux disease—its causes, symptoms, and its progressive nature. Additionally, we’ll delve into the pivotal role played by ultrasound technology in diagnosing this condition and formulating personalized treatment plans.

Venous disease is centered around the concept of ‘leaky valves’ within leg veins. These valves, responsible for maintaining proper blood flow, may malfunction, leading to the backward flow (reflux) of blood instead of its intended route towards the heart. This reflux can affect both deep and superficial leg veins, hampering efficient blood circulation.

venous disease | What Do I Need to Know About Venous Disease? [2024]

Leg veins can be categorized into two main types: deep and superficial. Deep veins, nestled within the muscles, primarily transport blood from the legs back to the heart. Meanwhile, superficial veins reside just beneath the skin, playing a significant role in this condition. Notably, the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) coursing through the thigh and calf, along with the small saphenous vein along the back of the calf, are key players in superficial vein issues.

Normally, one-way valves in leg veins assist blood flow against gravity, aided by the contraction of calf muscles. When these valves malfunction, blood backflows, resulting in pooling in the lower legs. This leads to symptoms such as leg heaviness, pain, fatigue, ankle swelling, and even restless legs at night. Over time, this condition progresses, leading to skin changes like darkening, dryness, itching, and the potential development of venous leg ulcers.

Venous Disease Diagnosis through Ultrasound

Venous Disease Diagnosis through Ultrasound

The diagnosis of venous reflux disease demands specialized tools, with ultrasound technology being pivotal. Many vein issues aren’t visible to the naked eye, as they arise beneath the skin’s surface. Ultrasound examinations provide insights into blood flow direction, valve functionality, and the presence of blockages or scars in the veins.

Personalized Treatment Approach for Venous Disease

Effectively managing venous reflux disease involves a tailored strategy for each patient. The treatment typically involves three key steps:

Step 1: Addressing Underlying Reflux

Treatment starts with addressing the root cause—venous reflux—often focusing on the saphenous veins. Innovative vein ablation procedures like radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation, mechanico-chemical ablation (MOCA), and Varithena Foam are employed to restore proper blood flow.

Step 2: Handling Varicose Veins

Once the underlying reflux is resolved, the focus shifts to varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy or minimally invasive removal methods are employed to eliminate bulging veins.

Step 3: Managing Spider Veins

For those seeking cosmetic enhancement, spider vein treatment through sclerotherapy completes the comprehensive treatment journey.

Venous reflux disease demands specialized care for effective management. Our approach encompasses cutting-edge diagnostics, advanced treatments, and personalized care to address the diverse aspects of this condition. Through our expertise and commitment, we strive to provide transformative outcomes that enhance both the health and quality of life of our patients. 4 Varicose vein transformations of our patients

2024-06-10T23:26:57-07:00

Varicose veins, those visibly twisted and bulging vessels beneath the skin, often spark concerns among many individuals, particularly in the legs. This blog post delves into the world of varicose veins, shedding light on their nature, underlying causes, and potential treatment avenues.

Understanding Varicose Veins

Varicose veins manifest as swollen, twisted vessels just beneath the skin’s surface. Despite their alarming appearance, they’re a prevalent condition that can provoke sensations of discomfort, pain, or a feeling of heaviness in the legs.

Causes Behind Varicose Veins

The primary culprit behind varicose veins is malfunctioning vein valves. These valves play a crucial role in regulating blood flow by allowing it to move towards the heart while preventing pooling in the veins. When these valves fail, blood accumulates in the veins, leading to their enlargement. Venous reflux disease, also known as venous stasis, venous insufficiency, or venous incompetence, is often the underlying cause of this condition.

Deciphering Venous Reflux

Venous reflux refers to the backward flow of blood against gravity due to faulty valves. Normally, calf muscles assist in pumping blood upward, but leaky valves cause blood to pool in the lower legs, resulting in the visible bulging veins seen on the skin’s surface. The great and small saphenous veins, responsible for returning blood from the legs to the heart, are commonly affected. In over 90% of leg varicose vein cases, these veins are implicated.

Insights from Research

A notable study led by Dr. Nisha Bunke, published in the Journal of Vascular Ultrasound in 2018, examined over 1,000 varicose vein-affected legs. The research underscored the great and small saphenous veins as primary contributors to varicose veins. Specifically, the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) traversing the thigh and calf’s middle and the Small Saphenous Vein (SSV) along the calf’s back were frequently involved.

Available Treatments

Fortunately, there are treatment options available to alleviate discomfort and improve the appearance of varicose veins. Minimally invasive procedures such as laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and sclerotherapy have demonstrated efficacy in treating varicose veins.

Patient Transformation: varicose veins vitality

Varicose veins, those twisted and bulging veins just beneath the surface of the skin, can be a common concern for many individuals. While they most frequently appear in the legs, they can also emerge in other areas of the body. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the world of varicose veins, exploring what they are, what causes them, and shedding light on potential treatment options.

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that are visible just below the skin’s surface. Their appearance can be alarming, but they are actually a common condition that affects many people. These veins can often cause discomfort, pain, or a heavy feeling in the legs.

Causes of Varicose Veins

The main culprit behind varicose veins is faulty vein valves. These valves are responsible for ensuring proper blood flow by allowing blood to travel towards the heart and preventing it from pooling in the veins. When these valves become leaky, blood starts to accumulate in the veins, causing them to stretch and enlarge. This condition is often a result of venous reflux disease, also known as venous stasis, venous insufficiency, or venous incompetence.

Understanding Venous Reflux

Venous reflux occurs when blood flows backward, against gravity, due to malfunctioning valves. Normally, the calf muscles aid in pumping blood upwards, but with leaky valves, blood tends to pool in the lower legs, causing the veins to bulge at the surface. This condition is frequently observed in the great and small saphenous veins, which are responsible for carrying blood from the legs back to the heart. Over 90% of the time, varicose veins in the legs are linked to these veins.

Our Research Findings

In a notable study led by Dr. Nisha Bunke and published in the Journal of Vascular Ultrasound in 2018, more than 1,000 legs with varicose veins were examined. The research revealed that the great and small saphenous veins were the primary sources of varicose veins in a majority of cases. The Great Saphenous Vein (GSV), coursing up the middle of the thigh and calf, and the Small Saphenous Vein (SSV), located along the back of the calf, were particularly implicated.

Treatment Options

Fortunately, varicose veins are not a condition without solutions. With advancements in medical technology and knowledge, treatment options are available to alleviate discomfort and improve the appearance of affected veins. Various minimally invasive procedures, including laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and sclerotherapy, have proven effective in treating varicose veins.

Witnessing the outcomes of varicose vein treatment can be truly remarkable. Many individuals experience significant improvements in both the appearance and symptoms of their varicose veins. These before-and-after images serve as a testament to the positive impact that proper treatment can have on one’s vascular health and overall well-being.

Varicose veins might be a common condition, but understanding their causes and treatment options empowers individuals to take control of their vascular health. With modern medical techniques, those suffering from varicose veins can seek relief and experience a significant enhancement in their quality of life. Whether it’s understanding the role of faulty vein valves, exploring the intricacies of venous reflux, or considering various treatment approaches, the journey to healthier veins starts with education and awareness.

Surface Varicose Veins Treatment

2023-05-24T17:22:51-07:00

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy works well for treating surface varicose veins and veins that are not visible to the naked eye. The foam medication can be seen on ultrasound, which allows us to administer it precisely and direct it towards nearby varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy can be safely used for veins that travel close to the skin or nerves. It also travels easily through veins with many twists and turns.

surface varicose

WHAT IS POLIDOCANOL (ASCLERA®)?

A variety of sclerosant medications can be used for surface varicose veins, but we prefer polidocanol (brand name Asclera®) because it is the most comfortable for the patient and has the lowest risk of side effects. It is a detergent-type medication that injures the inner lining of the veins. This causes the vein to stop flowing, then eventually close down completely. Polidocanol has been well-studied and has been approved by the FDA since 2010 for the treatment of varicose veins and has been used in Europe for decades. Polidocanol is turned into a foam to treat larger veins. This is an off-label use of the sclerosant but very effective and well tolerated. La Jolla Vein and Vascular providers have extensive experience with foam sclerotherapy.

How many treatments will I need for surface varicose veins?

The number and frequency of treatments depends on a patient’s anatomy, how well the veins respond to each treatment, and the patient’s treatment goals. The national average is 2 to 5 treatment sessions to achieve 80% improvement. Some larger or resistant veins require two or more treatments to respond completely.

What should I expect on my treatment days?

You will sign your consent form then change into shorts provided by the office. We will clean your skin with alcohol, then use ultrasound to localize the veins. The foam medication will then be injected into your veins with a fine needle. You will elevate your legs on a wedge pillow for approximately 15 minutes. After your treatment, we will help you into your compression stockings, then you will walk for 30 minutes prior to getting in your car. It is normal for your legs to be achy and tender to the touch after treatment.

Varicose veins can appear in the pelvis

2023-05-24T18:38:46-07:00

PVC: Most people know varicose veins mostly affect the feet and legs. But varicose veins can also occur in the pelvis causing chronic pelvic pain in women; this condition is known as Pelvic Venous Congestion Syndrome (PVCs) or ovarian vein reflux. Herein is a look at the condition, the risk factors, causes, symptoms, and treatment options. Read on to find out more.

What is pelvic venous congestion syndrome (PVCs)?

Pelvic Venous congestion is the enlargement of blood vessels in the pelvis due to faulty vein valves in the lower abdomen. See, veins have valves to guide blood flow towards the heart. However, these valves become faulty in some cases due to damage or other problems causing blood to flow backward. When this happens in the lower abdomen, blood builds up in the area, causing the veins to enlarge and change shape.

Therefore, PVCs are varicose veins in your pelvis. This engorgement or congestion of blood vessels in the lower abdomen can cause chronic, unbearable pain. It affects at least 1 in three women at some point during their lifetime. Chronic PVCs last more than six months. It is not associated with period pain at all. PVCs are common among women who’ve given birth more than once.

Symptoms to Look Out For

Chronic PVCs last longer than half a year. PVCs are commonly experienced for the first time during or following pregnancy. It is characterized by a heavy aching feeling that may get worse as pregnancy progresses. In most cases, you feel the pain on the left side only. But at other times, you may feel the pain on both the left and right sides. PVCs pain is usually worse during the evenings.

Certain factors also aggravate PVCs pain; these include:

  • When you change posture
  • Sex
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Walking
  • Menstrual period

Apart from pelvis pain, other PVCs symptoms include:

  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Sudden urge to urinate
  • Lower back pain
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (diarrhea and constant abdominal pain accompanied with constipation)
  • Deep dyspareunia – pain during intercourse
  • Feeling one’s legs fuller
  • Engorged and distorted veins around the vagina, vulva, inner thigh, buttocks, and sometimes down the legs

Varicose veins: causes, risks, and symptoms

2023-05-25T16:25:12-07:00

Varicose Veins and Venous Reflux Disease

Varicose veins are the twisted, bulging veins just beneath the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that you can see just under the surface of the skin. These veins usually occur in the legs, but they also can form in other parts of the body. Varicose veins are a common condition.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are caused by leaky vein valves, which allow blood to pool within the veins causing them to stretch and become enlarged. Varicose veins can be an isolated finding, but the majority of the time, they are caused by underlying venous reflux disease. Venous reflux disease is also known as venous stasis, venous insufficiency or venous incompetence. Reflux may occur in the deep and/or superficial leg veins.

varicose veins

In our study, led by Dr. Nisha Bunke and published in the Journal of Vascular Ultrasound in 2018, we studied over 1,000 legs with varicose veins. Over 90% of the time, the source of the varicose veins were the great and small saphenous veins. The Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) courses up the middle of the thigh and calf and the small saphenous vein (SSV), which courses along the back of the calf. Normally, there are one-way valves within the leg veins, which help blood flow in one direction: toward the heart. This means blood is traveling against gravity. The calf muscle also helps move blood toward the heart. When vein valves are leaky, blood flows backward (reflux) towards the feet. Blood pools in the lower legs, causing bulging veins at the surface.

What are the symptoms of varicose veins and venous reflux disease?

The symptoms can include:

  • Aching, tenderness
  • Heaviness, fatigue
  • General restlessness in the legs
  • Burning pain
  • Throbbing pain
  • Itching
  • Leg cramps, particularly at night
  • Ankle swelling
  • Skin discoloration at the ankle
  • Skin ulcers above the ankle

Over time, complications can develop from untreated veins. These include:

  • Superficial phlebitis (painful inflammation of the vein)
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis (blood clots within the varicose veins)
  • Spontaneous vein hemorrhage (the vein can rupture spontaneously)
  • Skin discoloration and eczema around the ankle (venous eczema)
  • Skin sores or ulcers usually near the ankle

Risk factors

  • Age. Aging causes wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help control blood flow
  • Sex. Women are more likely to develop the condition
  • Pregnancy. During pregnancy, the blood volume in the body increases
  • Family history
  • Obesity
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time

Varicose Vein Treatment: Patient Transformations

What are varicose veins?

They are the twisted, bulging veins just beneath the surface of the skin. These veins are swollen, twisted veins that you can see just under the surface of the skin. These veins usually occur in the legs, but they also can form in other parts of the body. Varicose veins are a common condition.

What causes them?

Varicose veins are caused by leaky vein valves, which allow blood to pool within the veins causing them to stretch and become enlarged. These veins can be an isolated finding, but the majority of the time, they are caused by underlying venous reflux disease. Venous reflux disease is also known as venous stasis, venous insufficiency or venous incompetence. Reflux may occur in the deep and/or superficial leg veins.

As you can see below, these patient transformations after varicose vein treatment are remarkable!
