Interventional radiologist Amanda Steinberger named a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor
Amanda L. Steinberger, DO, has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor, the second year she has received the prestigious Top Doctor honor.
LA JOLLA & VISTA, CA, February 20, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ — Amanda L. Steinberger, DO, has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor, the second year she has received the prestigious Top Doctor honor. Only about 7 percent of the nation’s licensed physicians are selected annually as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties.
Dr. Steinberger is an interventional radiologist who specializes in venous medicine— specifically, the evaluation and treatment of superficial vein disease. This includes conditions such as varicose veins, venous reflux/insufficiency, spider veins, and venous thrombosis.
She is with La Jolla Vein & Vascular, a state-of-the-art practice offering comprehensive minimally invasive vein care, with a vascular-ultrasound laboratory in both its La Jolla and Vista locations.
Dr. Steinberger is board certified by the American Board of Radiology in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology. She is also certified by the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine.
In addition to evaluating and conservatively managing patients’ vein issues, she performs advanced, minimally invasive treatment procedures including thermal ablation, sclerotherapy, and cosmetic laser.
“Over 80 million Americans have some type of vein disorder — from cosmetic things like spider veins to symptomatic varicose veins. We’re fortunate at La Jolla Vein & Vascular to be able to offer patients every available minimally invasive treatment for these issues,” says Dr. Steinberger. “We use these image-guided, minimally invasive procedures instead of procedures that used to be very invasive. Varicose veins, for example, used to be treated with an invasive surgery called vein stripping.”
The vascular procedures she and her colleagues perform are safe and significantly improve people’s quality of life with minimal downtime.
“Everything we do is low risk and high reward for patients,” she says. “It’s life altering without having a long or difficult recovery.”
Patients can expect a holistic, comprehensive approach to their care at their first visit with Dr. Steinberger. A typical first visit usually includes an ultrasound examination, followed by a detailed review of the patient’s concerns and discussion of treatment options with Dr. Steinberger.
Dr. Steinberger earned her medical degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her internship and a four-year residency in diagnostic radiology at Mercy Catholic Medical Center, during which she served as chief resident during her final year.
She completed a fellowship in vascular and interventional radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
Top Doctors are nominated by peer physicians and selected by the physician-led Castle Connolly research team.
This is the second year that Dr. Steinberger’s peers nominated her as a Connolly Top Doctor. Dr. Steinberger is known by her patients for her exemplary bedside manner and by referring clinicians across the nation for her expertise in managing the most complex cases in her subspecialty.

21 Foot Symptoms That Indicate Bigger Health Problems
PAYING ATTENTION TO CHRONIC FOOT PAIN IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR OVERALL WELLBEING.
Spider veins and varicose veins: Venous reflux
“Clusters of tiny blue and red blood vessels in the inner ankle may indicate an underlying problem [that’s] not visible to the naked eye,” says Nisha Bunke, MD, FACPh, RPhS, a vein specialist at La Jolla Vein Care in San Diego, California. She explains that these small veins are sometimes “the tip of the iceberg” and may be a sign of venous reflux, a condition that affects the circulation of blood in a person’s lower extremities.
If left untreated, venous reflux can lead to blood clots and hemorrhaging, so make sure to seek professional care if you have varicose pains coupled with any swelling or pain.
Darkening of the skin around the ankle: Chronic venous insufficiency
According to Bunke, the darkening of the skin around the ankle, also known as skin hyperpigmentation, is a sign of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). This According to Bunke, the darkening of the skin around the ankle, also known as skin hyperpigmentation, is a sign of condition occurs when the valves in a person’s leg veins aren’t working effectively, causing blood to pool in the veins rather than return to the heart.
“This [symptom] usually occurs in the inner ankle and can worsen to involve the lower portion of the leg,” Bunke says. “Over time, the skin becomes firm, dry, eczema-like, and itchy and can even break open, causing a venous leg ulcer.”

THE 5 BEST SOCKS FOR SWOLLEN FEET
When you’re struggling with minor aches brought on by travel, prolonged sitting and standing, or even pregnancy, the best socks for swollen feet are a game-changing addition to your wardrobe.
While these socks may be useful for easing discomfort, they should never be used as a treatment for a medical issue before consulting with your physician. And while many people experience the occasional sore feet, sudden swelling (aka edema) should never be ignored, “especially if the swelling involves only one leg,” notes Dr. Bunke. Store employees who stand for several hours a day are at a higher risk of developing varicose veins, warns Dr. Nisha Bunke of La Jolla Vein Care. Not only are they unsightly, but bulging leg veins are also an indication of poor circulation, which can endanger your heart health.
“To keep legs healthy, consider wearing compression stockings to give the blood vessels in the legs external support,” Dr. Bunke suggests. “There are different strengths of compression stockings, from light, over-the-counter support to medical-grade, prescription-strength versions.”
She points out that compression stockings also help with other symptoms that can come from prolonged standing, such as leg fatigue, swelling, aching and feelings of heaviness. Read More at Sparkpeople

Venous Disease Specialist: Wear compression socks if you sit or stand often“Compression socks are helpful for anyone to reduce swelling that may be associated with standing or sitting for long periods of time ( gravity dependent edema).
Compression socks are also important in healthy persons to reduce the risk of developing a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in the leg veins during long periods of immobility, such as during air or car travel, or even working a desk job.
As a medical professional, I wear compression socks every day to work, underneath my scrubs. I have done so for years, and so have my staff. Even without an underlying medical issue, compression socks can help reduce leg fatigue, discomfort as well as swelling.” —Nisha Bunke, MD, FACPh, RPhS, Venous Disease Specialist, La Jolla Vein Care.
SDVOYAGER ARTICLE FEATURING DR. BUNKE
Meet Dr. Nisha Bunke of La Jolla Vein CareToday we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Nisha Bunke.
Dr. Bunke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was the first physician in the U.S. to hold a fellowship specifically in venous and lymphatic medicine. What drew me in to this specialty was the misconception that varicosities were only a cosmetic issue, even though 1% of the population has or will have an active venous leg ulcer. And, the old mentality in medicine is that you don’t do anything until you need surgery. I saw a need in this field to educate both patients and physicians on the solutions.
The advances in technology also attracted me. Treatments are more effective; safer and recovery is faster. La Jolla Vein Care is now the leader in non-invasive treatments in Southern California.
