Patient guide for an endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure

2024-05-14T01:22:46-07:00

ClosureFast™, an endovenous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure, offers a revolutionary solution for combating the backward flow of blood, known as “Venous reflux,” in the saphenous veins. These veins, namely the great saphenous veins and small saphenous veins, are pivotal superficial veins located along the inner and back of the leg, respectively.

This minimally invasive procedure, often completed in less than an hour, is designed to restore proper blood flow and alleviate symptoms associated with venous reflux. Patients typically experience a swift recovery and can resume their usual level of activity on the same day.

How Does the Treatment Work?

radiofrequency ablation

The ClosureFast™ procedure begins by numbing the skin with lidocaine. A tiny wire and the ClosureFast® catheter are then inserted into the affected vein. The catheter delivers radio-frequency energy to the vein wall, effectively sealing it shut. Despite this closure, blood circulation remains unaffected as the remaining healthy veins continue to efficiently transport blood back to the heart.

What Should I Expect on the Day of Treatment?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with the option for patients to use a mild oral sedative, such as Valium, for added comfort. Patients are encouraged to wear a gown and leave their underwear on during the procedure. Depending on the vein to be treated, patients may lie on their back or belly, with special accommodations made for comfort, such as body positioning and the use of pillows.

To ensure comfort and relaxation, patients have the option to watch a movie on Netflix or listen to music during the procedure. Once settled, the skin around the affected vein(s) is prepped with a cleansing solution for a sterile procedure. The doctor then uses ultrasound to map the vein(s) to be treated before administering a numbing agent (lidocaine) into the skin.

A tiny puncture is made in the numb area of the skin to pass the radiofrequency catheter. Additionally, a combination of cool saline and local anesthetic is injected around the vein to be treated, numbing it and insulating it from the surrounding tissue. With the area adequately prepared, the vein is painlessly treated with radiofrequency energy.

Following the treatment, the leg is cleaned, and a compression stocking is applied, which the patient will wear continuously for 72 hours. Patients are encouraged to walk for 30 minutes before leaving the clinic to promote circulation.

ClosureFast™ Radiofrequency Ablation offers a highly effective and minimally invasive solution for addressing venous reflux and its associated symptoms. With its quick procedure time and rapid recovery, patients can reclaim comfort and confidence in their leg health with minimal disruption to their daily lives. If you’re ready to bid farewell to venous reflux, schedule a consultation with us today and take the first step towards healthier, happier legs.

How Can I Expect My Legs to Appear Post-Spider Vein Treatment?

2024-05-14T01:32:59-07:00

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are the fine, thread-like reddish veins at the surface of the skin. These veins are not healthy. Veins are often considered a cosmetic issue, but they can be associated with underlying feeder veins, not visible to the naked eye.  Feeder veins are the ‘blue veins’ also known as ‘reticular veins,’ that give rise to spider veins. Spider veins may also be a sign of underlying venous insufficiency. For example, spider veins located in the inner ankles and inner thighs can indicate an underlying problem with the saphenous vein. As a result, an ultrasound examination may be recommended to identify and effectively treat the underlying source of these veins.

What are the symptoms?

Vein conditions affect people differently. For some, these veins can be a painless cosmetic concern, and for others they may cause symptoms. The most common symptoms of spider veins are burning, throbbing, and localized pain. They can also feel hot and itchy and bleed.

What causes them?

Spider veins in the legs are caused by the same condition that causes varicose veins. Leaky vein valves allow blood to pool within the veins causing them to stretch and become enlarged. These veins on other areas of the body, such as the face, and chest can be caused by sun damage, hormone changes or liver disease. Hormones, such as with pregnancy, birth control or hormone replacement therapy can weaken the vein wall.

Unveiling the Mystery of Spider Veins: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Solutions

2024-10-23T09:32:43-07:00

Unveiling the Mystery of Spider Veins: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Solutions

Spider veins, those delicate, reddish veins that grace the surface of the skin, can occasionally be more than just a cosmetic concern. In this blog post, we’ll embark on a journey to understand what spider veins truly entail, dive into the potential symptoms they bring, uncover the underlying factors that contribute to their appearance, and shine a light on the significance of seeking effective treatment.

Understanding the Nature of Spider Veins

Spider veins, often colloquially referred to as thread-like veins, represent those fine, reddish veins that become visible just beneath the skin’s surface. Although they are frequently associated with cosmetic issues, these subtle veins can offer valuable clues to underlying concerns that warrant attention. It’s essential to recognize that the presence of these visible veins does not align with the concept of robust circulatory health.

Peeling Back the Layers to Reveal the Culprits

Beneath the skin’s surface, there lie feeder veins, which also go by the names ‘reticular veins‘ or ‘blue veins.’ These feeder veins, while not perceptible to the naked eye, serve as the conduits through which spider veins manifest themselves. It’s noteworthy that spider veins can also serve as indicators of venous insufficiency. For instance, if spider veins appear in regions like the inner ankles or inner thighs, this could be indicative of an underlying issue with the saphenous vein. In such instances, it is advisable to seek an ultrasound examination to precisely pinpoint and effectively address the root cause.

Spotting the Telltale Signs

Spider veins can manifest in a variety of ways, affecting individuals differently. For some, they might constitute a painless cosmetic concern, while for others, they can lead to discomfort. The most commonly reported symptoms associated with spider veins encompass sensations of burning, throbbing, localized pain, as well as feelings of heat and itchiness. In more severe cases, spider veins might even lead to instances of bleeding.

Delving into the Factors at Play

Spider veins on the legs share a common etiology with varicose veins. Both conditions result from the presence of leaky vein valves, which permit blood to accumulate within the veins, ultimately causing them to stretch and expand. In other regions of the body, such as the face and chest, various factors like sun damage, hormonal fluctuations, or liver disease can trigger the emergence of spider veins. Hormonal shifts, including those occurring during pregnancy or as a consequence of birth control or hormone replacement therapy, can weaken vein walls, contributing to the development of these visible veins.

The journey towards healthier veins is marked by visible transformations, as attested by the experiences of our patients who have undergone vein treatment. The before-and-after images serve as compelling evidence of the positive impact that effective treatment can have on individuals grappling with spider veins. The transition from discomfort and aesthetic concern to an improved quality of life stands as a testament to the importance of seeking the right care.

While spider veins may initially appear as a minor concern, they can often serve as a window into underlying vascular issues. Understanding their causes, recognizing potential symptoms, and grasping their broader implications empowers individuals to seek suitable solutions for their vein health. Whether it involves appreciating the significance of feeder veins, identifying signs of venous insufficiency, or acknowledging the diverse triggers behind spider veins, education remains the key. By choosing to address spider veins early on, individuals can embark on a journey toward healthier, more comfortable lives.

Are there non invasive methods for vein treatment?

2024-05-14T02:07:16-07:00

Uplifting Health Naturally: Embracing Non-Invasive Methods for Effective Vein Care

For many, varicose veins pose discomfort and concern. While there are interventional treatments, adopting conservative management and lifestyle adjustments can notably alleviate symptoms and diminish complications. In this article, we’ll explore conservative options that ease varicose vein discomfort, reduce complications, and enhance your quality of life without invasive procedures.

Understanding Conservative Management

Conservative management offers a non-invasive approach to handling varicose veins, particularly valuable for individuals not ready for vein procedures or preferring to delay treatment. Though they may not erase varicose veins entirely, these measures offer significant symptom relief and improve vein health.

Compression Stockings

Among the most effective and accessible conservative methods are compression stockings. These specially designed elastic stockings gently apply pressure on the veins, aiding blood circulation and preventing backward flow or pooling in the legs.

Medical-Grade Compression: Opt for graduated, medical-grade compression stockings. These provide appropriate compression levels essential for active patients with venous disease compared to TED hose, ensuring symptom relief.

Selecting Suitable Strength: Compression stockings vary in strength, with 20-30mmHg being common for treating varicose veins. Consult your doctor to determine the right compression strength. It’s vital to heed your physician’s advice regarding compression stockings.

Special Considerations: Individuals with conditions like peripheral arterial disease (PAD), diabetes, or neuropathies should consult their healthcare providers before using compression stockings. They might require lower compression strengths or have contraindications.

Avoiding Inactivity

Extended periods of inactivity worsen varicose vein symptoms. To enhance blood flow and alleviate strain on veins:

Regular Walking Breaks: Take short walks during long sitting or standing periods. Moving around the office or during breaks can boost circulation.

Seated Exercise: While seated, flex your feet up and down hourly to stimulate leg blood flow and reduce discomfort.

Movement While Standing: For prolonged standing, gently raise yourself on your toes or rock back and forth on your heels. These movements relieve pressure and encourage circulation.

Dietary Supplements

Certain supplements show promise in easing venous disease symptoms, such as horse chestnut and grape seed extract. Vasculera, a prescription medication, may benefit some individuals. However, consult your primary care physician (PCP) before starting any supplements, considering potential interactions or side effects.

Consult Your PCP: Always seek guidance from your PCP before adding supplements or medications, ensuring personalized advice considering your medical history and health status.

Conservative management and lifestyle adjustments can effectively combat varicose veins. Incorporating measures like compression stockings, regular activity, and selected dietary supplements under medical guidance can provide relief and avert complications. While conservative management may not entirely erase varicose veins, it significantly uplifts overall well-being and vein health.

Charting Your Course to Vascular Wellness: A Comprehensive Guide to Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

Enhancing Vein Health with Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy

In the battle against visible surface varicose veins and their concealed counterparts, the power of ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy takes center stage. This advanced procedure seamlessly marries precision administration with ultrasound visualization, offering a safe and effective solution for a range of vein conditions. In this article, we embark on a deep dive into the world of ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, shedding light on the role of polidocanol (marketed as Asclera®), treatment frequency, and what you can expect during your treatment sessions.

Revealing the Wonders of Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy: A Cutting-Edge Resolution

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy harnesses the synergy of technology and medical expertise to target varicose veins that may not be readily apparent to the naked eye. The foam medication, skillfully guided by ultrasound, is precisely directed toward varicose veins, even those hidden beneath the surface. This technique is not limited to superficial veins but is adept at navigating complex venous pathways with twists and turns.

Polidocanol (Asclera®): The Preferred Sclerosant

Among the plethora of sclerosant medications, polidocanol, known by the brand name Asclera®, shines as the preferred choice. Its patient-friendly attributes and minimal risk of side effects make it a prime contender for vein treatment. As a detergent-type medication, polidocanol gently disrupts the inner lining of veins, effectively halting blood flow, ultimately leading to complete vein closure. Approved by the FDA for varicose vein treatment since 2010, polidocanol boasts a substantial track record of success in Europe spanning decades. Its transformation into foam for treating larger veins, though an off-label application, has proven remarkably effective and well-tolerated by patients. Rest assured, our seasoned experts at La Jolla Vein Care bring extensive experience to the realm of foam sclerotherapy, ensuring your vein health receives adept and capable care.

Treatment Frequency: A Personalized Approach

The number and frequency of treatment sessions are as unique as your anatomy and individual vein response to treatment. On average, substantial improvement, approximately 80%, can be achieved with 2 to 5 treatment sessions. For some larger or more recalcitrant veins, two or more sessions may be required to achieve a complete response.

Your Treatment Days: An Expertly Guided Sojourn to Vein Wellness

Preparing for your ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy treatment day is a streamlined process:

Consent and Attire: You’ll complete a consent form and change into the provided shorts to ensure your comfort.

Skin Preparation: Your skin will be meticulously cleansed with alcohol, and ultrasound will be utilized to pinpoint the veins requiring treatment.

Injection Process: The foam medication will be gently injected into your veins using a fine needle, under the watchful guidance of ultrasound.

Recovery Period: Post-treatment, you’ll elevate your legs using a comfortable wedge pillow for approximately 15 minutes.

Compression Stockings and Walking: After treatment, compression stockings will be thoughtfully applied, and you’ll engage in a 30-minute walk before departing. It’s common to experience some achiness and tenderness following treatment.

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy ushers in a new era of enhanced vein health, offering precision and efficacy. At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, our dedicated medical team is unwavering in their commitment to delivering personalized care throughout your vein health journey. By embracing cutting-edge techniques such as ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy, you embark on a path to healthier, pain-free legs and an elevated sense of well-being.

How do I choose the right vein doctor?

2024-05-14T05:31:35-07:00

Whether you’re seeking treatment for a medical condition or pursuing cosmetic enhancements, selecting the right physician is paramount. When it comes to vein-related issues, such as varicose veins or vascular conditions, making an informed choice can significantly impact your treatment outcomes and overall experience.

Here are some essential considerations to keep in mind when choosing a vein doctor:

  1. Specialization in Vascular Conditions:

Opt for a doctor who specializes in vascular conditions. Venous diseases can be intricate, and expertise in this field ensures accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Look for a physician with a wealth of experience in dealing with various vein and vascular issues. Avoid those who merely ‘dabble’ in vein treatments, as specialization typically leads to better outcomes and access to the latest treatment options.

  1. Fellowship Training in Vascular Disease:

Choose a doctor who has undergone fellowship training in vascular disease. While any physician can perform vein procedures, those with additional rigorous training and certification in surgery and vascular specialties are better equipped to address complex issues. Vascular surgeons, in particular, possess comprehensive knowledge and a detailed understanding of vascular problems, making them ideal candidates for vein-related treatments.

  1. Board Certification:

Ensure that the doctor is board-certified. While all physicians must be licensed to practice medicine, board certification indicates a higher level of expertise and specialization in a particular field. For vein treatments, seek out physicians who hold credentials from reputable vascular boards, such as Sarah Lucas, MD, and Nisha Bunke, MD.

  1. Facility Accreditation:

Verify if the vein clinic and vascular diagnostic lab are accredited. Accreditation guarantees the quality of equipment and the expertise of personnel conducting diagnostic studies. Choosing an accredited facility ensures that you receive reliable and high-standard care throughout your treatment process.

  1. Ultrasound Diagnosis by a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT):

Confirm that ultrasound diagnosis is performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT). Accurate ultrasound imaging is crucial for diagnosing venous diseases effectively. A skilled vascular sonographer, coupled with a doctor trained to interpret the studies, ensures precise diagnosis and tailored treatment plans.

  1. Comfort Level with the Doctor and Facility:

Lastly, trust your instincts and assess your comfort level with both the doctor and the facility. Establishing a rapport with your provider is essential for effective communication and mutual understanding. Choose a facility that is not only state-of-the-art but also welcoming, with provisions for after-hours support if needed.

In conclusion, selecting a vein doctor requires careful consideration of various factors, ranging from specialization and credentials to facility accreditation and personal comfort. By prioritizing these aspects, you can ensure that you receive optimal care and achieve the best possible outcomes for your vein-related concerns. Take your time, do your research, and make an informed decision that aligns with your specific needs and preferences. Your vein health deserves nothing less than the highest standard of care.

Will my skin change with chronic venous insufficiency?

2024-06-09T11:09:17-07:00

Within the sphere of vascular health, Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) stands as a prevalent yet often misconstrued condition. Characterized by a cascade of symptoms that can ultimately result in skin changes and ulcers, CVI necessitates attention and effective management. In this article, we’ll navigate through the intricacies of CVI, shedding light on its symptoms, causes, and, significantly, its treatment.

Unraveling Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic Venous Insufficiency | Will My Skin Change with Chronic Venous Insufficiency?

Chronic venous insufficiency arises from a complex interplay of factors, primarily rooted in untreated venous reflux disease. Initial signs encompass discomforts like leg swelling, fatigue, and varicose veins, yet the condition can progressively worsen. As blood circulation falters within the leg veins, the skin undergoes changes marking the onset of chronic venous insufficiency. These changes, referred to as venous stasis, encapsulate the skin’s darkening, dryness, itchiness, and firmness. In severe cases, this deterioration can lead to skin breakdown and ulceration, known as venous leg ulcers or stasis ulcers.

Symptoms and Skin Changes of CVI

The symptoms of CVI extend beyond physical discomfort, manifesting in visible alterations in the skin. Venous stasis skin changes linked with chronic venous insufficiency comprise:

Darkened Skin along the Ankles: Disrupted blood flow leads to a darker hue, particularly around the ankles.

Itching and Dryness around the Ankles (Venous Eczema): Persistent irritation and dryness result in continuous itching and discomfort.

Formation of Wounds around the Ankles: Termed venous leg ulcers, these non-healing wounds necessitate specific attention and care.

Taking Control: Treating CVI

While the skin changes induced by CVI may be irreversible, managing the condition is crucial to impede its progression and prevent ulcers. Addressing the underlying venous reflux constitutes a pivotal aspect of managing CVI. By doing so, inflammatory changes may diminish, potentially improving skin symptoms. However, it’s essential to note that permanent skin discoloration might persist despite successful reflux treatment.

Treating Venous Leg Ulcers

For individuals progressing to venous leg ulcers, treatment necessitates a multi-faceted approach:

Correcting Underlying Venous Reflux: Addressing the root cause is paramount. Treatment methods vary based on the location of the underlying reflux, determined through a comprehensive ultrasound.

Referral to a Wound Care Clinic: Collaborating with wound care specialists adept at managing venous leg ulcers expedites the healing process through their expertise and treatments.

Compression Therapy: Employing compression garments aids in enhancing blood circulation and fostering healing, serving as a cornerstone in venous ulcer management.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition that commands attention, education, and diligent management. Understanding its implications and proper management strategies play crucial roles in averting complications and promoting healing.

Intense pulsed light ( IPL Therapy ) now offered at La Jolla Vein & Vascular

2024-06-09T23:28:29-07:00

Achieve Radiant Skin with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Are you looking for a versatile and effective solution to address various skin concerns? Look no further than Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. IPL is a revolutionary non-ablative procedure that utilizes broad-band light to target and treat a wide range of skin conditions, from unwanted hair and acne to vascular and pigmented lesions. At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, we offer cutting-edge treatments to help you achieve smoother, more radiant skin without any downtime.

Understanding IPL Therapy

IPL therapy involves the use of a handheld device equipped with four filters that emit intense pulses of broad-band light. Unlike traditional lasers, which emit a single wavelength of light, these special devices emit a range of wavelengths that can be customized to target specific skin concerns. This versatility allows it to effectively treat a variety of issues, including:

  • Hair Reduction: This therapy can significantly reduce unwanted hair on various parts of the body, including the face, arms, legs, and bikini area. The broad-band light targets the pigment in the hair follicles, damaging them and inhibiting future hair growth.
  • Acne Reduction: Therapy can help reduce the appearance of acne by targeting the bacteria that cause breakouts and reducing inflammation in the skin. It also helps to minimize the appearance of acne scars, leaving you with smoother, clearer skin.
  • Removal of Vascular and Pigmented Lesions: This therapy is highly effective at treating vascular lesions, such as spider veins and cherry angiomas, as well as pigmented lesions, such as sun spots and melasma. The broad-band light targets the pigment in these lesions, causing them to break down and fade from view.

The Benefits of IPL Therapy

One of the primary benefits of this therapy is its gentle and non-ablative nature. Unlike more invasive procedures, such as laser resurfacing, this therapy does not damage the outer layer of the skin, making it a safe and comfortable option for patients of all skin types. Additionally, IPL therapy requires no downtime, allowing you to resume your normal activities immediately after treatment.

Another advantage of IPL therapy is its versatility. What do I need to know about venous disease?

2024-06-09T23:42:06-07:00

Venous disease, known by various names like venous stasis, venous insufficiency, or venous incompetence, is a complex condition that impacts the veins in the legs. This article aims to unravel the intricacies of venous reflux disease—its causes, symptoms, and its progressive nature. Additionally, we’ll delve into the pivotal role played by ultrasound technology in diagnosing this condition and formulating personalized treatment plans.

Venous disease is centered around the concept of ‘leaky valves’ within leg veins. These valves, responsible for maintaining proper blood flow, may malfunction, leading to the backward flow (reflux) of blood instead of its intended route towards the heart. This reflux can affect both deep and superficial leg veins, hampering efficient blood circulation.

Leg veins can be categorized into two main types: deep and superficial. Deep veins, nestled within the muscles, primarily transport blood from the legs back to the heart. Meanwhile, superficial veins reside just beneath the skin, playing a significant role in this condition. Notably, the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) coursing through the thigh and calf, along with the small saphenous vein along the back of the calf, are key players in superficial vein issues.

Normally, one-way valves in leg veins assist blood flow against gravity, aided by the contraction of calf muscles. When these valves malfunction, blood backflows, resulting in pooling in the lower legs. This leads to symptoms such as leg heaviness, pain, fatigue, ankle swelling, and even restless legs at night. Over time, this condition progresses, leading to skin changes like darkening, dryness, itching, and the potential development of venous leg ulcers.

Venous Disease Diagnosis through Ultrasound

Venous Disease Diagnosis through Ultrasound

The diagnosis of venous reflux disease demands specialized tools, with ultrasound technology being pivotal. Many vein issues aren’t visible to the naked eye, as they arise beneath the skin’s surface. Ultrasound examinations provide insights into blood flow direction, valve functionality, and the presence of blockages or scars in the veins.

Personalized Treatment Approach for Venous Disease

Effectively managing venous reflux disease involves a tailored strategy for each patient. The treatment typically involves three key steps:

Step 1: Addressing Underlying Reflux

Treatment starts with addressing the root cause—venous reflux—often focusing on the saphenous veins. Innovative vein ablation procedures like radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation, mechanico-chemical ablation (MOCA), and Varithena Foam are employed to restore proper blood flow.

Step 2: Handling Varicose Veins

Once the underlying reflux is resolved, the focus shifts to varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy or minimally invasive removal methods are employed to eliminate bulging veins.

Step 3: Managing Spider Veins

For those seeking cosmetic enhancement, spider vein treatment through sclerotherapy completes the comprehensive treatment journey.

Venous reflux disease demands specialized care for effective management. Our approach encompasses cutting-edge diagnostics, advanced treatments, and personalized care to address the diverse aspects of this condition. Through our expertise and commitment, we strive to provide transformative outcomes that enhance both the health and quality of life of our patients.
