What should I know about VenaCure, an endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) procedure?

VenaCure, an endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) procedure, offers a cutting-edge solution for addressing backward flow, or “reflux,” in the saphenous veins. These veins, comprising the great and small saphenous veins, are pivotal superficial veins running along the inner and back of the leg, respectively. By targeting reflux in these veins, VenaCure provides effective symptom relief with minimal downtime, allowing patients to swiftly return to their usual level of activity on the same day.

Understanding VenaCure: How Does the Treatment Work?

VenaCure is a minimally invasive procedure designed to seal off refluxing veins using laser energy. The process begins by numbing the skin with lidocaine, followed by the insertion of a tiny wire and laser catheter into the affected vein. The catheter delivers laser energy to the vein wall, causing it to seal shut. Despite this closure, blood circulation remains unaffected as the remaining healthy veins continue to efficiently transport blood back to the heart.

What to Expect on the Day of Treatment?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, with the option for patients to use a mild oral sedative for added comfort. Patients are provided with a gown and leave their underwear on during the procedure. Depending on the vein being treated, patients may lie on their back or belly, with special accommodations made for comfort, such as body positioning and the use of pillows.

To ensure comfort and relaxation, patients are offered amenities like watching a movie or listening to music during the procedure. Once settled, the skin around the affected vein(s) is prepped with a cleansing solution for a sterile procedure. After ultrasound mapping of the veins, a numbing agent (lidocaine) is injected into the skin.

A tiny puncture is then made to pass the laser catheter under ultrasound guidance. Additionally, a combination of cool saline and local anesthetic is injected around the vein to be treated, numbing it and insulating it from the surrounding tissue. Laser energy is then used to painlessly treat the vein.

Following the treatment, patients are assisted in wearing a compression stocking, which they will wear continuously for 72 hours post-procedure. Patients are encouraged to walk for 30 minutes before leaving the clinic to promote circulation.
