Symptom Relief

While varicose veins are not preventable, there are certain things you can do to ease the pain. With mild symptoms, it’s often good to exercise lightly (e.g., walking, bicycling, swimming, etc.). This allows you to strengthen your leg muscles to help push blood back to the heart. With exercise on your mind, it’s also good to work towards maintaining your ideal body weight. If you’re looking for immediate relief, please note that properly fitted elastic hose with the compression level by recommended by your physician can help you manage the symptoms. While only a vein specialist can tell you exactly what to do based on your specific condition, you can take a few small steps towards easing your symptoms in the meantime. If you’re in the office while reading this post, perhaps you might want to lean back and relax. After all, elevating your legs is another way to control your symptoms.

Executive Team

Beautiful Legs

Keeping your legs beautiful might require a little help. Varicose veins, for example, affect a large number of people around the world every year. In the United States alone, up to 55% of women are likely to experience vein-related problems in their legs. Today, varicose veins are easily treated through a procedure called sclerotherapy. As your veins disappear after treatment, you might want to know if they’re gone for good. While properly treated veins are removed permanently, new veins may eventually appear. Why? Different veins (that were not previously treated) may have weak valves that give over time, eventually resulting in new varicose veins. The good news? These veins can be easily removed using the same treatment. Take comfort in knowing you can easily remove your varicose veins now—and that you have a safe and easy option for keeping your legs beautiful for the rest of your life.

Sincerely,

Executive Team

Skin Deep?

An estimated 80 million Americans suffer from a vein-related condition. Since most veins lie deep under the skin’s surface, vein disorders are not always visible to the naked eye. As a result, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms that might reveal an underlying vein condition. If you’re experiencing pain, fatigue, heaviness, cramping, or restlessness in your legs, you should seek expert consultation. Today, a venous duplex scan is used to view internal images of your veins, even the veins beneath the muscles (deep veins). The ultrasound exam, which is painless and takes fewer than 30 minutes, allows a trained specialist to examine your venous system to determine if your symptoms are connected to a vein-related condition. The good news is that many vein conditions can be easily treated. Often, you just need to look beneath the surface to get moving in the right direction.

Beyond Saline

If you’re looking to remove spider veins or varicose veins, you may find that saline injections are infrequently used. Why? They’re unnecessary. Today, more effective solutions are available for treating damaged veins. In short, saline injections cause stinging upon injection.  The saline solution mixes with the blood in larger veins, never making contact with the vein wall.  As a result, saline injections are only effective for tiny spider veins.  If sclerotherapy failed to remove your larger veins in the past, this is probably why. The good news? More effective and painless solutions are now available. Ask a board certified vein specialist (Phlebologist) which type of solution you should you use—and see if you’re ready to move beyond saline.

An Alternative to Surgery

Today, sclerotherapy is clearly the gold standard for removing spider and varicose veins. During this procedure, a specially trained physician injects a safe sclerosing agent directly into the blood vessel. The effectiveness of the procedure comes as a direct result of the training, experience, and judgment of the physician to make sure that the sclerosant’s volume, concentration, and exposure time are exactly right. What happens next? The solution displaces the blood in the vein, causing it to immediately appear lighter in color. The solution irritates the vein lining, causing it to collapse and blocking it from receiving more blood. Within a few weeks, the unused vein is absorbed by the body and disappears. With advancements in medicine, there’s no reason to go under the knife anymore—sclerotherapy is a safe, effective, and cost effective alternative to surgery.

Healing in Style

In the past, patients recovering from varicose vein treatments were limited in both mobility and style. After a procedure, patients were required to wear compression stockings in a lovely shade of beige. This might work if you’re looking to hang around the house for a couple months. If you’re ready to live an active life while you heal, however, you can get medical grade compression stockings that are fashionable, stylish, and comfortable.  At La Jolla Vein Care, you get more than a safe and effective alternative to surgery—you get access to customized compression stockings in variety of styles from the leading brands, including Sigvaris, Medi, ComfoMed, Ames Walker, and JOBST.  While we are more than happy to order beige stockings for you, it’s good to know that you have options—the option to look good, feel good, and heal in style.

The Beauty of Expertise

Selecting the right vein specialist is important for receiving the most effective treatment available. Today, veins specialists are called phlebologists. Phlebology is a specialty field of medicine dedicated to diagnosing and treating vein-related conditions. As a result, it’s imperative that whoever is treating varicose or spider veins is board certified by the American Board of Phlebology. To confirm that your vein doctor is qualified, simply go to the American Board of Phlebology website. In the upper right-hand corner, you’ll see a tab that reads FIND AN ABPh CERTIFIED PHYSICIAN. By confirming your doctor is board-certified, you’ll get more than better treatment—you’ll get the peace of mind every patient deserves. It’s the beauty of expertise—and it’s the convenience of having valuable information at your fingertips.

Sincerely,

Executive Team

Looking Good After Pregnancy

It’s estimated that 70% to 80% of pregnant women develop varicose veins during the first trimester. Pregnancy causes an increase in blood volume; however, it’s the hormonal changes that cause the veins to enlarge. Elevated levels of progesterone, which the body produces to stabilize the uterus, allow the veins to dilate. Later, the uterus enlarges and causes increased pressure on the veins in the pelvic area. While varicose veins often disappear after delivery, the venous valves are damaged. When varicose veins are still visible after three months, it’s time  contact a vein specialist. It’s important you look good, feel good, and remain healthy—particularly after pregnancy.

Taking Flight

Patients traveling from different states or countries to seek treatment at La Jolla Vein Care can return to the air within 24-hours after the procedure (although it’s understandable if the stay is extended to take in the beautiful sights of San Diego). Although a patient can easily resume most day-to-day activities right after treatment, it’s recommended to avoid air travel for the first 24-hours. Once in the air, however, it’s important to wear the prescribed compression stockings and work on increasing the circulation in your legs. To do this, please make sure to pump the calf muscles regularly and get up from your chair every two hours. It’s the best way to facilitate healing in the air—and it’s a sure fire way to avoid economy class syndrome.

Sincerely,

Executive Team
